I've been Warhammer-curious for a very long time, but always back out when I hear about players that don't see the satire and earnestly love the terrible characters/factions.
Has the community been able to address that yet?

They aren’t a majority of the community, and the majority of the community finds them annoying and generally doesn’t play with them because their attitudes carry over into how they treat their opponent.

Added bonus that painting the figurines is a genuine art form, and very calming/ flow state-y. The level of shading and detail skilled people get is really impressive! My dad used to be into it when I was younger and I dabbled with him, less so now.

Huge respect for the Warhammer and board/card games shops near us - they (especially the indies) know they're a community space as much as a company. For a time in my teens, I used to visit Warhammer every day after school and it's true, there's so little "safe" community space for young people.

It's great to see things like skate parks and playgrounds get regeneration and attention, but a) these places don't then get funded for staff or "moderators", and b) they're rubbish once it gets dark. Imagine if we used the same amount of funding for authority-led indoor spaces. Pipedream.

My eldest discovered WarHammer a couple of years back. He spends hours painting the figures, and there’s a local (ish) club where he takes a selection for battles against other people.

So much of modern childhood - from doing PowerPoint presentations from KS1 to being expected to be a high achiever in group contexts - assumes everyone is an extrovert, but there are all sorts of people with all kinds of skills out there and they all need some space to thrive

Totally agree with this for introverted kids. When we run afterschool sessions of Scratch or Lego Robots or 3D printing the kids that come are often those you mention but they thrive because they get on and do their own thing amongst a group.

Loved Warhammer as a teen. So nice to hear the folks in shops are as warm as they were in the 90s.

But v sad to learn that 40k (the Space Marine one) has a growing misogynist element to it (some lads seem to forget the heavy satire of a far future fascist empire and take the tone seriously)

Very true. Along the same lines, my young person has found a real haven at our local Geek Retreat - they do Warhammer but also card gaming. There may also be local variations on the same thing. Parallel play is the way to go!
