Personal liberty—to insult, coerce, carry an AK-47, refuse vaccination? Free markets—for votes, basic healthcare, child porn, safety, the truth? Requiring exclusive focus on the defense of general ethical concepts is meaningless & demeaning.
The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men.I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. You will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee
Bezos should give control of the WaPo to his ex-wife, MacKenzie Scott bec of his many conflicts + terrible editorial decisions re K.Harris and the Common Cause ad.
Also, he should speak up about Trump-Musk attacks on the fed government or risk seeming like a collaborator a’ la Petain.
If you search online for a product, Amazon & its products dominate results. Use Amazon to find out about a product, user reviews, pricing, etc. & then go directly to the manufacturer to buy on line or find a locally owned business to buy in person.
This method has worked for me for months.
This guy got soooo lucky and then destroyed a free market for his own gain…they joined the dark side because the ability to survive as a monopoly was ending…be an oligarch and support corruption. Feeling very good about canceling Amazon, getting it out of my retirement accounts and unsubscribing
"opposing those pillars". It's not a binary, weirdo. How dumb do you have to be to think those two topics aren't gray and complicated with plenty of discussion and compromise to be had?
Personal liberties should be free from fascism (and more generally from any bullshit control the Republicans always want to inflict on everyone else) and free markets should be free from monopolies (which means fairly regulated).
That's obviously not what this bald hypocrite is saying.
"And a big part of America's success has been freedom in the economic realm and EVERYWHERE else."
EXCEPT:
"....but viewpoints opposing those pillars (personal liberties & free markets) will be left to be published by others."
My theory is that Bezos knows he can't compete with Musk in the rocket business. Trump told him to tow the line to even the field. Or, Bezos is thinking that WAPO is the closest thing he has to Twitter/X. Power corrupts, stupidity is forever.
Where is the mass exodus from the newsroom? Legit reporters are sandbagging their own resumés. Every day unemployed after taking a principled stand looks ten times better than one more day working at a house organ for an infantile oligarch…that explicitly announced it was.
“And I’d like to start this change in direction with my own personal liberties. You’ll print what I tell you to print or you’re out of here!” - Jeff Bezos.
so another words, WAPO is admitting they are going full fascist instead of tiptoeing around it,but they better take that bullshit statement off the masthead because with them “democracy has died in the light” not darkness.
tl;DR “I ran off our core base and they aren't coming back so let’s take a stab at the MAGAs. I’ll fund it because it will more than make up for it with my Trump tax cuts. Bummer about your health care and food”.
That’s disgusting actually, and why billionaires with other interests shouldn’t own newspapers in democracies. Is basically Oligarchy in Russia! Also since when has the owner had a say in what the paper writes? Oh, since Murdoch normalised it!!!
So i guess this means he will be pushing a womans free liberties to do with her body as she chooses and fighting for market competition in the energy markets to end subsidies to one energy (oil) market over another? Oh and advocating for greater competition in the free market for media outlets!?
I’m undoing all my Amazon habits. The shopping was easy, Amazon Prime was easy, less easy is Whole Foods since I live on an Island with limited food shopping but I’m trying. Kindle will be the hardest because I’m an avid reader but I’m determined to not give one cent to Bezos!
My wife and I are trying really hard to stop shopping at these monsters… Amazon, Walmart, Target, etc. I never realized how reliant on them we had become.
Bezos' personal liberty + free markets allow his companies to violate the personal liberty of individuals to collectively bargain their compensation in a free market for labor.
Wonder if WaPo would run an exposition on that opinion up the flagpole?
and when the "Religious Freedom" bill gets passed and it's ok to discriminate against gays on religious grounds ... i'm sure Bezos and his opinion page will step up, do the right thing, and push back against this administration. 👌
Real question- how much would it take for you, Mark Cuban, et al to start up an alternative from scratch with all the WP refugees and dissenters? Instead of buying could it just be replicated a la Blue Sky and Twitter?
I see nothing but opportunities to pick up all of WaPos subscribers if someone wants to start a real journalism news site. Liberals represent 70% of the GDP. Let them scream into their own silos. Vote with your attention and your dollars.
🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄. So much for the free market of ideas. I was excited to see a left leaning billionaire at the head of one of America’s great news outlets, our answer to Rupert. The green has taken over his values.
I cancelled Twitter after Musk bought and broke it. I cancelled my WaPo subscription last October after Bezos stopped the paper from endorsing Harris. Today I cancelled Amazon Prime and Audible. It's time for each of us to do something, even if it's just unsubscribing or cancelling.
Let's be honest. F*ck this guy and all the companies he owns.
Amazon has continuously sought to undermine workers' rights.
I am committed to stopping using Amazon. I will drive to the store. I will order from other websites. I will buy directly from sellers.
It's interesting how billionaires frame 'freedom' and 'creativity' while controlling narratives. True diversity of opinion shouldn't be a commodity. Without diverse voices, are we really having a conversation, or just a monologue? The balance of power in media is crucial to a functioning democracy.
What is the use of having billions if you don't have "fuck you" money and instead you still have to go on your hands and knees groveling? I finally canceled my Amazon Prime today. I'll just go back to stopping at the store.
Our health insurance system is a kind of bondage in that it is either inadequate or unaffordable unless you get it through your employer or as a retirement benefit. Will you be sharing opinions about that?
Soon every city town and villiage will celebrate 4th of July by display the bleached polished skulls of the oligarchs we the people dug out of their doomsday bunkers like rats.
Well this is a pretty anti-Trump position. Nothing is less free market then tariffs, which are taxes synonymous with Trump. It is odd that a newspaper would take a stand on “personal freedom” and not freedom of speech, but maybe he recognized how ironic that would seem in this context.
Billionaire can't see that his fifth paragraph directly contradicts his third paragraph and establishes that he is the very thing that he opposes. He's a wazzock.

It's a naked plea to Donald Trump: "PLEASE DON'T HURT ME, PLEASE DON'T HURT MY BUSINESSES!!"

Also, he should speak up about Trump-Musk attacks on the fed government or risk seeming like a collaborator a’ la Petain.
And what an appealing idea: personal liberties without accountability or responsibility!!
Unfortunately, we do not live in such a world.

Und Musk auch...
Will man so behandelt werden?
For the rest of us 🙇♂️: “restricted freedoms and manipulative markets.”

New WAPO: Here are the facts. Follow them.
I hate that term, but it’s never been more applicable
Tomorrow Amazon 📉
These billionaires genuinely believe they are invincible. Just look at the Vanderbilts.
We built you. We can and will destroy you.
Its not hard.
Oh really, Jeff?????!?
Tell that to the Ukrainians Musk & Trump are trying to shake down for mineral extortion “payments” for “freedom.”
Doesn’t sound so ethical!

Why do billionaires need more money?
💩

“Stormy Daniels said Donald had a little mushroom penis. Need to do some due diligence, and need confirmation on this.
Does he, Jeff?”
Ketamine doesn’t do this.
Canceled WAPO, PRIME and anything else connected with him.
He can do what he wants with it
If you don't like it
Start your own and compete
Let me know if that sounds in any way familiar
The billionaires are destroying everything!
