It is shameful. Whenever travelling the roads and byways with my wife I always rue the lack of tree coverage. I've travelled around Europe and Canada and Ireland has to hang its head in shame. Other countries have glorious forests, meadows and woodlands. We have agricultural fields.

I've only been realising this in the last few years, thanks to Eoghan and others. What I always believed were beautiful Irish landscapes are actually ecological wastelands. It's truly shameful. We need to take large steps to reverse it.

We'll be retiring soon. It's my dream to buy some land and plant it full of indigenous trees and volunteer with groups to plant trees wherever they are needed locally. It's a small step but I think it's an important one. Government needs to lead in this but I have no great hope, so I'll get digging!

That’s the big problem with the ag sector having so much power/sway over things. They’d disagree with me 100% and rage against environmental/biodiversity initiatives but it’s so evident that they’d rather destroy this aspect of Ireland for a few €€€

It’s amazing how little they seem to care because in the short term it’s not worth it. Particularly in parts of the country where farming isn’t as “easy” and the land is rougher.
