Basara just so happens to have access to a cutting-edge Valkyrie which he uses to play his music in battle, and this will evolve across the series with more members and equipment to become Sound Force. Music is used instead of bullets, continuing a major theme that weaves throughout the franchise

And the music is great! Fire Bomber is both an in-universe and real world rock band with some great tracks. Some of it is repetitive, especially at the start of the series, but it grew on me very quickly and now I listen to a lot of Fire Bomber

Macross 7 brings back some of my favorite characters from the original series, so that was super cool. The power couple dynamic of Maximilian becoming the military leader of the fleet and Milia the mayor was really interesting, and they're both still incredible pilots who get their chance to shine

The Protodeviln antagonists of Macross 7 are super interesting, a combination of Cthulthu Mythos-type gods, emotional entities, and brainwashed soldiers. At first appearing completely emotionless and alien, they're revealed to be complex and unique, especially Gigil and Sivil

I really liked a lot of the characters including Ray, Gamlin (that fake-out was NOT okay), and of course Mylene. Her discovery of song energy and how it connected to her emotions was beautiful, and there were some interesting parallels in color design with the DC emotional spectrum.

No series is perfect: the first arc is very repetitive, and the animation feels cheap (it all gets better). I appreciated its sillier tone, though some won't. Odd that TWO female characters are essentially mute. And I had to make my own headcanon about Mylene's age, otherwise it's too weird...
