I didn't learn this until after I left my first cashier job. I was fast, had more stuff to do than others, and I thought that was good.

Then I realized we're all getting paid the same, essentially regardless of performance. I should have worked hard at being a slacker instead.

Oh yeah I did too. I wanted to do my job and do it well and make the isles I was in charge of cleaning sparkle. The thing is... that was taking away from the energy I had to work on things outside of that job that wasn't paying me enough to live. So something had to change.

Yeap! I'll do my job but not more than that. There is for sure merit to hard work when it goes into something you're passionate about, and sometimes there's no way around just clenching your sphincter and getting on with it, but running myself ragged in vain hopes of Career™? Nah, WYSIWYG. :V

Absolutely. It sucks because company's have more negotiating power in the worker-employer dynamic, so if they ask more of you, sometimes it's either that or firing. Having a secondary source of income is vital to equalizing that playing field so that you can tell them "want more work? Pay me for it"

Yeah exactly! I'm very lucky and privileged to both be living in a place like Denmark and working at a company that actually respects me and my needs, but even then i maintain a strict "i am not doing more than i'm paid for" attitude. Don't want to set any unfortunate precedents. :V
