I've been out of the business of making Shiny apps for a while, but my move was always to use flexdashboard and one of the Bootswatch themes:

An easy trick for an instant win is to pop a nice (but not busy) image in the background and use 90% opaque backgrounds for everything on top of it. Unsplash is my go-to for photos you can use with credit or you can just use a nice gradient.

I've also invested in David Granjon's "Outstanding User Interfaces with Shiny" which was recommended by Veerle Eeftink - van Leemput - l haven't worked through it, but the recommendation and content I have taken a quick look at make it a promising resource!

Aside: I just realized that my Mastodon account still bridges over here to Bluesky and people respond to that and I don't get notifications. I think I may need to end the bridge even though a lot of people follow it. Confusing now that I'm here.
