One of my crazy hear me outs... Make everything go electric earlier and raise the motorway speed limit. The efficiency loss on bigger electric SUVs at speed is astonishing, and it's to do with the impact of drag on an already much more efficient powertrain. People will go back to saloons.

The problem is that ordinary cars are getting ever bigger and manufacturers are calling more and more ordinary models SUVs because that’s what they think the market wants. I have what is essentially a family size hatchback EV but Audi calls it an SUV.

Smallish electric hatchbacks (as small as modern hatchbacks can be called) like the Nissan Leaf and Renault 5 are 1.5 tonnes. 2 tonnes is medium SUV territory (although BMW apparently made the i4 out of cast iron).

The problem being, there's very few of those and lots more larger electrics - typically nudging the 2000kg range. An original R5 would have been around 750kg, albeit with none of the modern safety etc.

In many road accidents that would see you on a slab in the morgue 20 yrs ago, people are walking away without a scratch. That sort of protection demands bigger vehicles. It's a vicious circle. The Japanese kei system seems to work well in their cities, so maybe it could work here.

"Allowing". How do you reasonably prevent it? Some people (rural, big families, ...) really do need huge cars. As for the rest, the draw seems irresistible despite the obvious drawbacks (expensive, hard to manoeuvre, hard to find parking spaces, fuel costs, ...)

My experience is cars in general are getting smaller, my pool of cars I can fit in that have safe headroom & legroom, at 6ft8in, I can count on one hand.
