I had to teach my ex-music teacher how to use the school's fancy new ST/MIDI setup.

Which was an interesting conversation, given he'd tried to fail me at GCSE music the year before as he reckoned the ST audio recordings I submitted could possibly be my own work😂

Ah, see my problem was I never had the patience to stick with practicing an instrument, & music notation doesn't make sense to my brain. I got grade 7 classical guitar but that was all rote learning. I know now it was all ADHD etc stuff getting in the way, but we knew bugger all about it back then.

But then there were sequencers and MIDI and you didn't need to be able to be a virtuoso to produce amazing music! So suddenly I could get all the sounds out of my head and into people's ears, the way I imagined them!

It was about 6bn% better than anything I'd done before so they called shenanigans😅

Playing from the dots is a mixed blessing. It only really allows you to play somebody else's music. To actually be musical you have to unlearn all that and start again.

You're prob right. I learned guitar through school & they were very keen on passing exams, sight reading becomes important higher up grades... just can't do it. At all😅
I made up for it in aural stuff cos I've got basically perfect pitch. But actually playing, especially sight reading - Christ no😂🤣

Consider that this was the pinnacle of production in the 1990s, Fatboy Slim did most of his stuff as did Jarre... House music would not be where it is without it...

Ha. First time I went on those obviously it's only got software eject for your fdd and not being able to find a physical button I thought it had eaten all my work forever and ran around panicking until I found someone that could use it.
Quite a good looking machine mind.
