Puns are actually a fantastic form of humour and people’s exasperation at them only makes them funnier and more powerful

The beauty of a pun is in the ugh of the beholder.

I am the designated eyeroller/groaner for my gang. I consider it a sacred duty. :)

I always thought that exasperation was a part you play, an expression of “yes and”, the funnier the pun, the louder the groan. Are people genuinely not enjoying them?

Correct. That's why @zaltzcricket.bsky.social is the best comedian in the country. Legendary pun runs.

A groan of annoyance is the greatest response a pun can get, because it means the joke-teller has made the audience complicit in the punchline.

i see it as one of the few comedic methods that (generally) doesnt rely on physical mishap/injury, insulting others, or punching down.
the only misfortune involved is the dismay of the audience at having to experience clever wordplay.
