I always thought that exasperation was a part you play, an expression of “yes and”, the funnier the pun, the louder the groan. Are people genuinely not enjoying them?

i see it as one of the few comedic methods that (generally) doesnt rely on physical mishap/injury, insulting others, or punching down.

the only misfortune involved is the dismay of the audience at having to experience clever wordplay.
