Gail and Greg Warner left Florida for a new life in Spain in 2018. The couple say there are some things they can’t adjust to, but they’re happy to be off the “hamster wheel” of life back home.

Great article but things are very different now! I’d urge everyone to do their homework, research fully and not just assume you can arrive here and live; you’d be surprised the amount of people who think they can do what they like with regards to immigration, tax, laws and customs.
Also note that the USA has citizenship-based taxation, not residency-based, so you still have to file IRS 1040s and FATCAs every year even living abroad permanently
Immigration laws for moving to another have become more restrictive since then as well. Options that once existed no longer do. It requires money, or a job, retirees have to have lots of cash to prove they won't be burden to the country they move to. Ask me I've actively been trying!
It makes me mad when they make sound easy. I've been looking into this, and I do not have enough cash. I'm 61, not yet retired and frankly, unless I'm a millionaire nobody wants me. I can't afford to live anywhere else.
I’m 58. And can retire. I can’t buy my way in anymore. Portugal HAD the Golden Passport which enabled one to buy property. That drove property prices up so it’s being drastically reduced.
No, you do not have to constantly travel back and forth! Mexico: Foreigners can buy property in Mexico easily. Bank trusts make property ownership easy for non-citizens.
Panama, Portugal, Spain, Greece, Italy, Costa Rica all offer incentives for property buyers, with special visas for investors.
I've been checking into Portugal. What I have against me is I'm not a student, I'm not in a job that has high demand, I don't own a tech company and you can't just invest in real estate to live there anymore.
Investment will run you anywhere from 250,000 to 500,000 or more. You must prove you can support yourself by not using the Portuguese economy. That means a pension, or rental property income or something. I don't want to live in Mexico
You will need to have the cash to buy any property, or utilize a trust to protect yourself in any country..My home in Playa del Carmen, Mexico costs me less than $6,000 a yr, with ocean views.. a manager that stocks everything I need when I go down..and a cleaning..1 hour flight and I'm in heaven.
In August we were in Portugal and my wife fell and cracked her wrist and three ribs. We walked to the hospital ER and got right in. It was clean and well organized. We saw two docs and got full X-rays. Cost was 110 EUROS.
Spain allowed a nazi political party named 'vox' which should never be allowed to be a political party as nazism and extremism are terror itself! Europe has such parties recently fed with garbage like xenopobia, Anti-Semitism and Islamophobia! Those are threats for peace of immigrants if not ended!
I’m doing the same, and planing for it when I retire. Most Americans doing this are only looking at Spain and Italy, missing out on some great countries by following the flock. Be organized, research, and throw as much cash into your retirement as possible.
Have seen my parents parents struggle, specially with access to health care in the us, good retirement, additional private insurance, but somehow keep getting rejected for medical coverage affecting their quality of life, they can move, refuse to leave their awful red state, they are not republicans
Not a big surprise. Almost everything that counts is better in EU. Safety & Guns control. Education. Public Transportation. Healthcare. Food quality. Work-Life balance. Cultural diversity & rich history. Less social stratification. Environmental awareness.
You made a statement that was not based in fact (so not “right”either) only a sweeping statement about New York and California. The hamster wheel is actually a by product of consumerism and capitalism.
The primary reason I would not choose the United States for long-term settlement is the pervasive notion that almost everyone might be heavily armed. This creates an environment where I do not feel safe. After all, you cannot use a weapon you don’t possess.
The American gun culture scares a lot of us here in the states, as well. It's based on a WRONG interpretation of the Second Amendment, which was NEVER intended to protect individuals' gun rights. But politicians and judges have accepted the twisted views of the NRA. Repugnant. Here's a great book.
What is the point of articles /reports like this? First, it is people complaining about moving then explaining why they won't come back. Am I supposed to use what little info they have to share to decide to move? Keeping up with the Jones' BS.
Spain has a fairly open policy for foreigners to buy property, especially in coastal regions. The paperwork can be managed efficiently, and there's a robust real estate market for international buyers.
"Are you worn out by global politics? Looking to embrace a more balanced lifestyle while securing new opportunities?" the website asks. "It's time to start building your European escape in the stunning paradise of Sardinia."
Italian village offers $1 homes to Americans upset by trumps win!
Sicily, to a small town that mainly welcomes Americans & provides a lot of benefits for those who move there. So far, almost 40,000 have registered an interest.
Interesting article. This article was clearly not factchecked. You cannot apply for a permanent residency permit until you’ve been living in Spain for 5 years. You do not need a long term lease. You can buy soap at any supermarket. And a lot more that’s simply incorrect.

See CALIFORNIA & NEW YORK for clues.
Compare to other states.
I think it's easier when you say it. Just the spelling and some never heard of it. 😀
