Every generation of new graduates struggles to get their first job. They have the knowledge and the requisite degrees, but they don’t have experience. They can’t get the experience without their first job. It’s like a catch 22.
CNN is dishonest. They're not struggling because of a "competitive" market; they're struggling because workers compete while corporations collude to fix wages and benefits. Corporations have no borders but your labor does.
Let them work in the vegetable fields, construction, slaughter houses after Trump removes as many undocumented immigrants as possible. Trust me, there’ll be jobs, American jobs. Trump said so. (sarcasm)
This is an age-old problem where degrees aren’t aligned with jobs. For instance, a bachelors degree in ancient art is nice to have but is a minimum wage job.
The student from U of Vermont says she would have benefited from some mandatory job-training structure, and UoV says they offer (optional) job resources for students. I’m curious if the mental load that college demands leaves little mental-energy left over to think about using career services.
That was certainly my experience. To be truly competitive you need internships and extra curricular experiences while you’re still in school full time. What are you even getting out of your classes when your attention constantly is divided between 10 different tasks and topics? Boxes checked?
"Graduating college no longer gives students a leg up in the workforce."
I don't comment on stories I don't read but I will on this one.
A quick comment.
Bullshit.
Current employers are looking for people who can impact their cash flow in the current quarter. Jobs in Mfg are shrinking faster than people are retiring. Admin and support jobs are being outsourced and AI'd. Experienced jobs in sales and marketing are all that's left in growth.
Well if you are going to base getting jobs on Merit there is no way a recent college grad can compete with a person with the same degree and experience. College kids are screwed on the merit system. There is no more DEI. It not only hurts people of color and women but also new grads.
Won't get any better. The new regime doesn't respect training , qualifications or rxperise unless it matches their agenda. Only #whitemen English apply!
College is a scam unless you are seeking a career & knowledge. Go to trade school and you'll be set to be in pain & maybe disabled before reaching retirement age.
Really. Higher education itself is so costly and out of reach for thousands of people who want to afford life is a corporate disgrace. Blue collar workers are so important to the fabric of our society but there’s little room for upward mobility. This is what angers maggots & we’re to blame. Excuses
I worked with a person who just finished her master’s degree and looking for a new job. Well, she came across a company who advertised they wanted an entry level worker with 10 yrs experience, master degree, and some other qualifications and the pay was only $18 per hr. It was near a major city.
Some companies want over qualified workers for little pay. My company is that way so we have high turnover over in the IT department. They get their 2 to 3 year experience in and go somewhere else just as they learn how our industry works. Frustrating.
Slave wage jobs are about to make a comeback. Kids quitting school to help support their families are about to make a comeback. Lot of field positions are about to be open. Hearing “grateful to have a job” is about to make a huge comeback.
Why don’t any of these articles talk about how new terminal high school grads are faring in the job market? It implies that forgoing college may be a response without examining the results for people who make that choice.

fElon will keep them out of the work place with slave labour via the HB1.
By the way, isn't fElon an illegal immigrant?

The problem is that oligarchs don't want to pay; they want to hire H1B, pay them cheap and ship them back.
