Like hell he was. This was all decided weeks ago. We need change, not more elitists. Carney is a major league elitist. Freeland would have been a better choice.
Hopefully he wins the election against the conservative candidate. However, Carney's background gives me pause. Right wing anti-establishment populism is driving neoliberal governments out of office across the Western world. And Canadian liberals just nominated a former Goldman Sachs banker.
Where were you in 2008? Mark Carney was the governor of the Bank of Canada through the global economic crises. Mark Carney is an economist first and foremost and he will beat Poilievre because Poilievre = Trump.
It's more about reading the room. Voters are rejecting the centrist liberal technocrats. They're losing election after election. Kamala learned the hard way that simply not being Trump isn't enough to win an election. 1/3
Canada is not the US. Canada’s election will be about who will defend Canada from Trump and his administration. Poilievre and his conservatives would hand Canada over to Trump. Jamil Jivani, an Ontario conservative MP, is JD Vance’s best friend. That’s a straight line to Trump.
Nation after nation thinks themselves immune to the newly ascendant right. Repeatedly they say, "it can't happen here." And then it does. Poilierve, objectively, will be a lapdog for Trump. But that doesn't mean he is going to run on that message. 1/2
Carney has never won an election. He's the exact kind of "deep state" operative that the right focuses so much on. Yes, he's a skilled economist, but economists lost Kamala the election. Economists told Kamala the economy was fine because economic indicators looked good. 2/3
But people's lived experiences weren't being actively reflected in GDP and inflation-adjusted income stats, and this caused Kamala to make some really bad campaign decisions. People were hurting, and Trump rode that hurt right into the White House. 3/3
That's what we in the US said. We thought we were exceptional. This isn't a US phenomena. It's a global one. Conservatives like Trump have been winning elections in countries throughout the developed world. 1/3
And there's the problem. Those conservative liberals are the types that have been losing elections to right wing populists. Kamala ran just that kind of centrist campaign based on a message of competence, democracy, and not being Trump. And she lost.
How the HECK is Conservative Party which is famous to like Mr.Trump leading the polls as we saw the big reaction to Mr.President's Canada's being a US State and tariffs in recent matches between US&Canada teams ??? Are the polls fake or are the majority of Canadians are 'T R A I T O R S'??
Carney can fight back against Donald Trump on trade wars with U.S.-Canada. Donald Trump will never win against this guy and Canada will remain an independent nation to avoid Canada being the 51st state of America. Carney will be the best choice as prime minister to protect Canada at all costs.
Should be mandatory that an election be called right away. The people of Canada didn’t vote for this guy at all. Canada needs to change this kind of action
This is the election of the new leader for the Liberal party, which also makes him the new Prime Minister, replacing Justin Trudeau. Federal election has not yet been called so no set date yet.
That is correct. Mark Carney will remain leader of the Liberal party through the election. If enough ridings vote for a Liberal candidate, Carney will be elected Prime Minister. As of right now, he hasn't been elected by the general pop, just by members of the Liberal party. By default he is PM.
Great. Now show us what you’re made of…and show what a Canadian hockey player can do to that orange blob idiot and his hillbilly crumpets south of the border.
As a former Governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England too, he can tell the criminal U S President: “I’ve already been called ‘Governor’ but it’s a past title Donald. A convicted felon however is your title in perpetuity.”
We are not picking someone to have a beer with. So you go to war with the brightest minds. Canada needs to make structural changes. The good news is Canada has the tools, talents and 40 million people committed to make our country great
This is a very encouraging pick. I hope the momentum carries thru to a win in the election. I think he will continue the good fight against the Trump policies.
And Carney's mandate is for him to take an even tougher stand against Trump's bullying. Here's to this new Canadian PM showing himself worthy of this mandate...
Although we have a Trump wannabe leading the official opposition, hopefully the wave of patriotism sweeping the country will shore up support for Mr Carney and his agenda.
These are crazy times. He is what we need. He has a conscience and I will always remember his steady leadership as Governor of Bank of Canada during the financial crisis of 2008. As a lifelong NDP voter and lower/middle class Canadian, I am feeling positive about having him at the helm.
Also, I will never fit the definition of a 'Liberal'. I appreciated his remarks on market regulation. He has provided a measured response to a wildly fluctuating situation. Does he completely align with my values? No. But probably nobody does. Certainly nobody that would be a viable option for PM.

Trudeau was the problem. Now he’s gone.
Carney is similar to conservatives in Canada (ie fiscally pragmatic, socially liberal). Either way it’s a good change.
We don’t elect PMs here. We elect parties. The party picks the leader.
Not us.
The leader of our Conservative Party is a complete ass though.
Good news for Canada.
We are now seeking partners who honour their commitments and follow the rule of law

The leader of the party in power, basically becomes the country's leader.
