I have a mono white Kithkin typal deck that ran Enlightened Tutor. It's technically a 3 but is DEFINITELY a 2. I swapped in Open the Armory to appease the watching world. Brad has a Ghen deck that had one too many GCs for 3, and swapped out Enlightened Tutor for an Academy Rector. This feels silly. - ThreadSky

folks who say 4 and 5 are too similar are missing the forest for the trees. 4 and 5 are better defined that 1, 2, and 3 for emfranchised players

We got a deckbox and sleeves with Radiant, Serra archangel on them in the Amsterdam Premium goodie bag. So K built her. It's not a good deck, just a load of flyers and pillow fort stuff. Mostly the budget starter deck.
It rated a 3 until an hour ago, when I pulled the Smothering tithe out.

I’ve just decided I’m building 4s even if they land in 2-3. As usual mindset matters so much more.

I have a couple of decks (borb and bolas) that are getting hit by this the same way that the bans did just because I’m aggressively compensating for trying to make 8 mana dreams more than a meme

it kinda is. exact quantities can't possibly be important enough for one card to matter that much. and tutors are only as strong as the cards you can find. i 100% trust your "definitely a 2" more than any technical analysis of a decklist.

This now also means that the pubstomper at your local LGS will use those "maximum" numbers as their absolute target so they can say "but it is only a 3!" while the less experienced "definitely a 2 with Enlightened Tutor" 3 assumes that it'll be the same powerlevel

I really feel like this is the deckbuilding version of semantics.

I know I don't need* to make these swaps and could run the Kithkin deck with the ET and be justified, but just the thought of an opponent going "HEY BUT YOU SAID IT WAS A 2" if I cast ET was enough for me to swap it, and that is 👎.

Thats my whole problem with the GC list. They're telling me that my Chandra Typal deck - which folds against most precons - is a 4 because of the sole Blood Moon in it.

The system is trying to say someone getting completely locked out of the game by a blood moon is a pretty intense/unfun experience for a low power pod and the collective enjoyment of the table would almost certainly be higher if that blood moon was ~any other card.

I think I'm okay with them limiting categories of effects to the different tiers... I just think it's double dipping for them to do that AND put cards in those categories on the GC list as well.

Practically speaking, you'd probably be just fine with saying "It's a 3 but has blood moon. That cool?"

Yeah, it just feels arbitrary at times, you know? I get it's just a beta but it doesn't keep in mind things like obviously underpowered themes trying to do their thing.
And unfortunately, not all playgroups are equally amenable to "rule breaking" as they see it.

I was flipping through our binders thinking "What should I put in instead of Enlightened Tutor?" Then I came upon the Academy Rector and immediately wondered why it wasn't in the deck to begin with. 😅
