i had a stay in venice for about 4 months once and that's the one way to understand completely carless urban life (no people don't have personal boats either)

A Venetian once remarked to me that his city was the only one were people did not behave like idiots, staring at a light and waiting for it to turn from red to green before moving on.
people fault it for being just a tourism town but they do day trips and visit the tourist sites and then think "wow look at all the tourists." and sure it is that, but there's also the university and if you are there for a bit you learn to avoid the tourists
I was on a visit this year at a peak tourist time (an Italian holiday I didn’t know about) and was shocked at how many areas had few or no tourists. Love Venice.
We went Florence once. It was in the fall so they were sick of tourists. People in tourist areas were unfriendly. We had a terrible time. Then we went to the charming non tourist areas and had a fantastic time.
There's a big difference between visiting a place on vacation and actually spending time living there. (I had a 10 day work trip to Montreal turn into 6 weeks way back when PATCO went on strike and man, I love that town.)
right and it is true that venice is largely a tourist town - the permanent population keeps shrinking - but also it's a place where you can wander in to a random tiny church and see a Titian.
Many decades ago my friend and I got lost in the back streets of Venice at nightfall. Just amazing how dark those narrow streets get with buildings on each side.

In all seriousness, what was living there like?
