Totally agree even the weirdest SNES RPGs have that "what were they thinking?" charm. That’s actually the spirit behind my upcoming book it dives into the most infamous misfires and what made them fascinating
Happy to DM you a chapter if you're into gloriously broken games Let me know
Anyway Emerald Dragon's battle system is bizarre. It's got a bump system like Ys, but it's got random encounters and once you transition to battles the battle system is sort of turn based where you and the enemy take turns bumping into each other.
There's not much of it but this game actually has voice acting (it's mostly just battle grunts but also a few shouts during dialogue) and I think it's always really cool when a SNES game has voice acting, even if it's a bit primitive.
One really cool feature in ED is how there's an optional party chat that lets you see the party's thoughts on current events and give a bit of extra character development outside of story dialogue.
ED SNES is kind of a weird one. It's a late 1995 SNES port of a late 1994 PC Engine remake of a 1989 PC-88 RPG but the only two with fan translations are the SNES port and the MSX port of the original version.
Absolutely lovely story, it's one of the more popular PC-88 RPGs to my understanding
