I'm definitely in favour of allowing things like metric-specified elevators for new buildings. It may make adaptive reuse of old building tricky, but it's ultimately worth the hassle.

I used to do a lot of government work. It was all done in metric. Problem is, building materials are predominantly in imperial dimensions.

89x140 studs but at 405 o/c (when 25.4 x 16" = 406.4). Sometimes use the nearest 5mm convention, sometimes not. I guess in fairness I wasn't spec'ing what _temperature_ I meant when I spec'd the length, so who knows how long the building was at that moment and so a bit of slop seems appropriate.

Canadians are the purest metric users I have met. They even use kPa instead of mBar.

British kids have learned metric at school for half a century so you have to be older than that to think imperial.

(Except for road miles and mph and mpg. And beer pints. And recipes on US websites. "Cups" ?!?!)

Happy 05/20/25 to you! It is truly strange that Canada, despite being officially metric, still does construction in inches and feet.
And let's not forget the Gimli Glider!
(Sadly still 5'10" and 180 lbs. Can't seem to shake that one.)
