Fossil fuels have downsides, but after two years studying and working through the physics of the climate I am no longer sure the CO2 causing global warming story is correct. Fossil fuels are what transformed our civilization in positive ways for the many, they are not like tobacco.

I get the point about undermining climate science but surely it’s their duty as an employer to conduct research in areas that impact their workforce or communities, especially in the remote, extreme environments in which they operate? Without data and insight, they can’t make informed decisions.

If you operate in an area blighted by malaria, want to give something back to the community, and help protect your workers, investing in malaria research and local programmes is the right thing to do. It’s not cynical.

You can’t put activity like this in the same box as undermining climate science

In fact, I’d say investing in medical research for those purposes is an operational necessity.

Completely agree on climate science.

A fair question is how much influence a uni’s medical school might have over its environmental science school if the latter is about to publish critical research.
