I've lived in the same town for almost 30 years and in the same house for 15...and I have never known a single one of my neighbors by more than sight and the odd "hello".

But then I am very judicious regarding the people I let into my life because I have very limited in-person social bandwidth.

Depends on the city, in my experience, and possibly neighborhood by neighborhood. The more affluent, the less likely you know your neighbors.

Fair enough. I live in a very nice part of Manhattan but admittedly most of the people in my specific few blocks are longstanding residents from before it necessarily took that kind of money so that might be the exceptional part. That said I'm famously gruff in person so I dunno, might break even.

I use the word neighbors to mean everybody in my close community not just the people who live in the houses next to me. The people who are walking down/sleeping on the same streets, the people who work in the same grocery stores and who go to churches and schools around me. neighbors

I don't even know what he's talking about. I know a bunch of my neighbors. I'm not sure about all their politics (I live very close to a military base in a red state so it's a mixed bag in several ways), but there are a few who are already very involved in community organizing and activism.

And, like, I get it. It can be hard to find community, especially when you've moved away from where you grew up, and especially in big cities. But community *does* exist, even in the biggest and most alienating cities, and it *is* possible to find.

a lot of people are personally alienated from their communities! i get why they’d project that, but alienation is not natural or permanent. we can change that with (pretty minimal) effort. every connection is worth making. its not organized revolution or bust, its help each other survive, or die lol

i’m not stupid, i know a vanguard party isn’t gonna spring up overnight. maud’dib ain’t coming; we wouldn’t want him anyway. but every individual action to connect & strengthen community bonds is a revolution against alienation. that is worth it to me. that is how we survive & build something better

I live in exurb NJ and know all my neighbors. Plus our trunk or treat (which happens IN ADDITION to trick or treating) happens at the grade school so we know everyone there too!
