I can agree with the first but the second will surely need a democratic mandate from the public, AS? There'd be little point in us trading one system that doesn't respect the public's wishes for another.

Some may want EU, others EFTA-EEA, or possibly no link at all - but it's their choice too.

Also by treaty the acquis requires a decade of financial data as an independent country too. EFTA doesn't and I think that would be a more logical first step.

Clearly the EU didn't enforce that in the new countries that joined in 3-4 yr. As with most of the Acquis process it appears negotiable. And interestingly EU support (including funding) starts with acceptance as a Candidate Country. It's not the b&w process your post might suggest.

Not quite, the EU didn't enforce those rules for Greece etc but that led to the Greek financial crisis etc. subsequently the EU has been explicit that they won't ever do the same again.

There is perhaps some wriggle room over money but it's unlikely. What's very unlikely is the EU negotiating

Before Scotland is totally independent and our democracy established. How could it be otherwise? Without independence, a constitution, democracy etc how does the EU know what it's getting?

I just think EFTA straight away. Get under the full protection of the court of justice and so the EU day one.

Try to make the whole accession process as smooth as possible. From day one offer to open the books to EU scrutiny. Integrate as fully as possible into EU institutions such as SM/CU, courts etc while still outside. Pass EU directives into law while we don't have to. Make it really easy to vote Yes.

Also bearing in mind the EU accession process is not a law but political agreement. Any country could be fast tracked if there was sufficient political will behind it.

Transition period in dissolving the Union should be an opportunity to put in place a constitution to limit the power of the executive. Politicians being humble servants of the Scottish people
Membership of the likes of NATO - EU should be dependent on a referendum. That should motive the negotiators

By putting negotiating, International Treaties and agreements dependent on approval by the people gives the negotiators a lot of clout.
Simply a 'Naw thats off the table the people would reject the terms (eg nuclear weapons in Scotland during NATO membership negotiations) same goes for EU membership

Very much so and that is where the constitution comes into it.
Foreign treaties, Trade deals, Military deployment abroad dependent on the approval of the people.
The politicians should have the fear of the people behind them in every decision they make.

Indeed. Independence is the start of a process that will take years to complete. The power must rest with the people and politicians need to understand that and accept they work for us, not the other way round.

So you don't like the EU? Every poll since 2016 has shown that a large majority in Scotland are in favour of rejoining. On a similar basis the UK joined in the first place without a prior referendum.

Where do you get that from? Only poll's that matter are the kind everyone has the opportunity to take part in. Just because the UK did something doesn't mean I'd like to see Scotland do the same either.

I am pro EU. But it is in Scotland's best interest that the negotiators go into talks with the EU or any other organisation regarding terms and conditions to join. With the power of the people behind them and have in their locker 'The people won't accept that' That is a lot of clout.

Agreed and… IMHO, the independence vote should not be saddled with a load of other commitments or requirements to commit to anything other than independence. My next door neighbour is a fervent independence supporter but strongly against EU. How would they vote if EU is locked into Indy?

After becoming independent I expect a majority will want Scotland to become a Republic as part of the creation of a written constitution.
