I’ve spent a fair amount of time in small town Iowa (family is from there), the decay isn’t as dramatic as what you’re talking about (mostly), instead the places are more just…fading away.

There's more sources of money but it drains right out or is a non-sellable resource so your point stands. (Wife works on utilities and good lord we spend and work to keep rural folks connected, it goes to the utility though)

I got this impression driving through rural SW Pennsylvania... almost the only businesses going were the auto dealerships near the freeways
