1. China doesn't need them with 70% global market share in processing
2. Zelenskyy might have suspected this, as his demeanour suggests. He was trying to placate some one who resents him, and he balked at their bullying, but did not lose his dignity. Not so Trump and Vance.

Trump wanted China to take notice of the deal, but his move was also in part to placate Putin. Both P and Xi know the global market for critical minerals. They know the deal was performative theatre. 4/

The political Kabuki theatre was for Trump revenge and resentment capital with his base. And China just wants Trump playing with Russia and Ukraine instead of thinking about Taiwan. The US can get what it needs from Canada and South America. What it lacks is processing capacity, that China has. 3/

Trump was taking the mickey out of Zelenskyy from when this "deal" appeared. He set him up. That's his revenge for not playing along and smearing Biden. Even if Z. had signed it, it was a Memorandum of Understanding, unenforceable under International law. 2/

China won't want to know until the dust settles. The best we can hope for is that Americans wake up and destroy the republican party in the mid terms. Europe may need to put boots on the ground before then. If north korea can then we should.
