I'm thinking, in which universe would Stretch want to be a therapist? He needs to be at least 40% Papyrus with his motivational tendencies to have had the motivation for the studying... Or he became one just so that he could listen to people lazily and nod with a clever face.

I could suggest some personal motivational factors: social awkwardness/phobia and/or the need for attention. Learn how they tick and that they're probably not judging you but worry about being judged. Laugh away your mistakes, pretend you're dumb on purpose, entertain everyone in the process.

Additional motivation: the underground is pretty damn boring. People research is a great pretense for making them do weird stuff for your entertainment. I had a theory already that Sans might use pranks for testing people, to see if the human is dangerous or whether anybody is going crazy.

Definitely. And Fell psychology would be a very interesting matter. Layers and layers of mind games, but people are educating themselves on the matter and hiding their knowledge because the last thing a paranoid tyrant needs is a population that can figure him out.

I ended up using humor to combat my perfectionism: if there's not a single original thought left on earth, everything can be a parody, and if it happens to be original - happy accident. I'm a beginner at a thing? I'll do it as badly as I can on purpose! Also because it's boring otherwise.

Another reason for an older brother to get into psychology: the younger's learning disability (my brain won't stop giving Blue ADHD). His education is your puzzle to solve... But then every monster parent is a bit of a psychologist and a puzzle designer. Stretch could've written a textbook or two.

Even if you don't study people in purpose but just read a lot of books, you find out there's a finite number of personality types and figure out their behavioral patterns. You'd use the skills to predict who did the thing in a detective novel, like a puzzle. Trying to predict people's reactions too.

They may have been dragged in for couple therapy by their partner that thinks they need antidepressants. The initial horniness in their relationship must've worn off and/or the partner became annoyed with the mess. Would be amusing if it led to a threesome, because either would start flirting.
