usually the grip have decorations that work like 'wrinkles', but that's a thing only the more formal chopsticks.
As for the food handling, I don't think the problem was resolved.

Western spoons are multipurpose. Ladle soup into your mouth, cut a bit larger than necessary potato chunk down to size, works just as well with soup as it does other soft / multitudinous foods (try eating Cap’n Crunch or a bowl of ice cream with a miso spoon).

Specialization is for insects.
