I assure you pressure like this exists. I’m at a public high school, and I won’t stand for the pledge, and I get remarks like, “You should really be setting a good example for these kids”. Of course, I think I’m doing exactly that.

I’ve been thinking about how certain we are that we’re right and how to deal with that with humility without abandoning the obligation to strive for what’s right, and I thought about Lillian Gobitis, who died in 2014. She and her brother were expelled from school for not standing for the pledge.
