Online media is at risk for defamation suits - just as with any other location where defamation may occur you can sue the speaker.

Online platforms are immune from being sued for publishing lives. Regular news papers and TV news can get sued, even for little things.

Your intended meaning was understood. I'm prolific at making typos. I've given myself a lot of experience in reading through them :-)

Lies themselves are not generally actionable unless they fall into specific subcategories (defamation, fraud, false commercial speech).

That a news org authored and published a lie doesn't necessarily result in a cause of action for a civil claim.

If a news org [re]published a story from some other news org, and then that story was found to be defamation,

the republisher may be able to invoke the Wire Service Defense (which is a bit like §230(c)(1)) to protect themselves.

(Though sometimes it is easier/cheaper to settle than to pay for legal resources to fight and win).

You'd be surprised how far some protections extend.
