The world got its first glimpse on Friday of the newly renovated Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. The Gothic medieval masterpiece is scheduled to reopen on Dec. 8, five years after a devastating fire shut it down. https://nyti.ms/41fB1zb

I'm a hardboiled atheist. But this still makes me happy. Something about a big group of humans working together for a common goal. And the goal is not killing one another.
France for all of its Catholicism respects the separation of church and state. The government financially supports the « Bâtiments de France » and they are regarded as cultural, artistic treasures for everyone.
Same. I don't care about the religious meaning of the building. It is one of the words great structures. Happy to see if look so great in the reopening
I'm so glad to see it restored.
Interestingly, I visited the Notre Dame Cathedral just two days before the fire. I have often wondered how many of the wonderful objects which I saw on that day were damaged or destroyed by that fire.
Glad I got to see it before the fire in all it's Dark spooky glory. It looks a bit Disney now, pretty but Quasimodo would not feel at home. @nytimes.com
Amazing feat. Tell me again why humans will spend so much time, energy, resources on a man made thing but do little to nothing to protect & restore eco systems to save our only home 🩷🌎😢
The massive timber roof structure, although it’s not visible from the interior or exterior, and the timber spire, were crucial elements in the restoration and completed in an amazingly short time by members of les Compagnons du Devoir, which includes the traditional French timber framers guilds.
ITT: people who don't respect humanity's great accomplishments. In the end we all die - our art, sciences, architecture, and other artifacts are all that's left for future generations to appreciate us. Plus, France makes huge $ from tourism due to attractions like this so it's not just a money sink.
Most of the money was via donations and there actually a considerable ROI with tourists and the such. Plus its a national treasure /landmark of France....so
One it's religion and second lots of money was spent to bring it back to the way it was. Which that money could have been used to feed the homeless people. And three they could have spent that money to give a lot of homeless people there own small homes
You would be hard pressed to find an ancient building that hasnt had at least some modification...to at least keep it up right over time. And Notre dame has undergone signficant modification/repairs over the centuries a....the most recent one was just the roof
This restoration is a powerful reminder that even in the face of destruction, humanity’s capacity for resilience and renewal knows no bounds. Hint hint.
