Protesters clashed with the police in the Republic of Georgia’s capital late into the night on Sunday during the fourth consecutive day of demonstrations over the recently elected government’s suspension of its bid to join the European Union.

I used to wonder why a country would not want to be in the EU. But the problem now is not EU overreach, (The EU is a "Federal" government on Europe, but is only 2% of GDP). It's the lack of upside. Georgias problem will be a mass exodus of citizens, thus the protests.
The real problem in the EU with immigration I believe is not immigrants, but Shengen migration. Lithuania was hollowed out by this, everyone wants to live in Germany, France, and (sigh) England. We fall for this rhetoric in the US, not realizing how much more tolerant we are then the EU.
So Lithuania and likely Georgia fear they will lose their citizens to other countries, and these other countries worry they will lose their culture. These are the downside of radical multiculturalism, which is beautiful in its own way, as a tourist.
I was watching this DW piece on the Notre Dame reconstruction, an absolute marvel of period resoration. And this upper class uptight French Karen was complaining that all the old rickety furniture was gone, and now the cathedral looks like a "5 star hotel".
If Notre Dame looks like a 5 star hotel now, perhaps the 5 star hotels this Frenchwoman visits are amazing period resorations of French Chateu?? I don't know, but that's such a wierd thing to say about a perfect period correct publicly funded endeavor.
This is what I mean about radical multiculturalism, in the end it's just snobbery. The Frenchwoman is rejecting her own heritage in favor of what she experienced before the catastrophic fire, and refuses to accept anything other then a dirty, damp, dark cathedral as "authentic".
I’m torn on this. Russia could steamroll Georgia and it’s understandable that the government doesn’t want to antagonize the bear. On the other hand, Georgia in the EU would be good for the country’s long-term growth and survivability and solidify western governance on the Eurasian steppe.
Georgia is indeed facing a difficult choice in this situation. They need to consider their relationship with Russia while also pursuing greater development opportunities, which is no easy task. I hope they can find a balance that ensures the country's safety and prosperity
Hey NYT, that ‘recently-elected’ government is widely recognized has having lied about its victory and has usurped power in the country. Professional exit polls showed them receiving no more than 40% of the vote. Why do you hide the truth?
It’s bad enough that Putin interfered with the recent elections but now he’ll probably send in his mystery military to rescue the oppressed ethnic Russians. Where have we seen this ?
Chechnya, Ukraine Georgia.
Sorry but there are no oppressed ethnic Russians in Tbilisi. Those are in the north and that region, named South Ossetia, has been off limits for Georgians for decades. The people there have Russian passports.
World be so getting "Let's Do the Timewarp Again"
I mean are we this close to the Middle Ages.
So confusing. EU = NOW
One of those Balkanized crosses just screams THEN
