UnitedHealthcare has been accused of using algorithms to deny treatments and refusing coverage of nursing care to stroke patients. UnitedHealthcare and its parent company now face a class-action lawsuit over its use of the algorithm.

it's unacceptable that a healthcare company would prioritize profits over patients' well-being. denying life-saving treatments and care is a clear example of corporate greed.
Oh wow now the New York times wants to actual report news. This is what I'm talking about when it comes to legacy Media. There's got to be an uproar and outrage before they actually do what their business is supposed to do.
United doesn’t pay many providers enough to break even, and it gets away with not providing required mental health care by paying so little for therapy and psychiatric care that providers can’t afford to be on their panels, leaving patients with nowhere to go.
Any health insurance using AI to “process” claims at this moment in time is asking for to be held liable. It’s likely this will be the future and as customers we will all hate it.
It's disturbing to hear about UnitedHealthcare's alleged denial of necessary treatments and care to patients, including stroke victims. Algorithms should never prioritize profits over people's health.
Shouldn't you guys be writing shitty articles about how *scary* trans people are, and nitpicking Kamala's policies? Don't try to pretend you're an actual news organization by posting here. Go back to Twitter.
There is something inherently wrong about privately run for-profit health insurance. It is by design inefficient. The way they make profits is through charging more and honouring fewer claims.
As I was told by management when I worked in member services for a health ins company, they are there to make profits for shareholders, not take care of members.
Both Healthcare insurance companies and AI are inherently evil. Because those creating them know of the potential harm. So the errors and deaths caused are ‘premeditated’.
How this can be your healtcare system? I've read horrible stories care danay. How everybody doesn't want to change this? I thougt you had expensive insurense but that you get the care you need. I was very wrong. Hope you can fix this asap.
Uh...does the Times still believe us serfs out here in the real world who need the fucking insurance we pay for should be feeling sorry for the CEO that got shot?
I've had both United Healthcare ins and Blue Cross Blue Shield ins and in my case United costed more and covered less. Since where I worked decided the ins company I was stuck.
Google EviCore. Uses AI to reject prior authorizations and then doctors review at a pace of 4 or more reviews per minute. Think the 10-15 minutes your doctor spends with you is too short? How about 20 seconds?
All that being said, The ACA was still a thing and when United healthcare started f****** with me.I didn't have to shoot anybody
I just switched to Clover
Not trying to stump for anybody here, but you are allowed to switch
What amazes me is that we have a political party in the UK, called Reform UK, who think changing to this model from our own, a health service free at the point of use for every citizen, is a price worth paying for a trade deal with America.
Message to Nigel Farage: No way. Not now. Not ever!
This is not new—there are at least a dozen such suits and the dead CEO and other UnitedHealth execs are under investigation for insider trading… They tried to recruit me last summer—I had less than zero interest in helping them screw 50M Americans and told them so
It's alarming to see healthcare companies prioritizing profits over people. Algorithms should support patient care, not deny treatment. Denying nursing care to stroke patients is unconscionable. UnitedHealthcare must prioritize patient well-being over corporate interests.
26,000 people die every year in America because they don’t have healthcare, these people will literally kill people by the thousands if it means a few more dollars in their pocket #delaydenydefend
There is so much wrong here on a human level in the name of greed. 1)AI assessing claims/coverage - that used to be someone’s job 2) people paying insurance only to have to jump through hoops to use it is insane.
Now you post this after UHCs CEO was gunned down!!! Your fucking priorities for reporting news that has been news for a decade or longer that affect Americans daily lives should be labeled negligence. FO.
We all know, the answer is no. First and sometimes, final answer. We know, oftentimes we have to pay a lawyer, to get money from OUR insurance company.
We know, why.
Aetna uses one also. To the point Doctors won't make the request and say they always refuse this. Wife insisted,as soon as it was sent, within seconds denied. But 3 different Aetna Reps said it was covered that day! Oh, but Universal care is bad!
I’ve ended up in the er multiple times bc insurance refused to cover insulin and related supplies for my type 1 diabetes. I’ve spoken to my state rep, but nothing will ever be done. Too much lobbying by medical companies!
BCBS. They won’t cover it if prior authorization isn’t done and that sometimes takes longer than two weeks and if my supplies runs out before the week before refill allowed, then they deny it.
I'm interested in the criteria used for the algorithms. This is becoming more common with employers too. But I know that when insurance denies claims and you don't pay, the only ppl fighting for your claim to be paid are service providers. If you go ahead and pay, that's the end of it.
BTW, that as algorithm didn’t write itself. Someone gave it instructions. What were those instructions? Did anyone test to see that the instructions provided gave us the right outcomes? Who validated the model?
The definition of insanity is repeating the same actions and expecting a different outcome. Let's see what happens when they deny a claim and kill another loved one or leave a bereaved child
In other words, it's a shame a tragic assassination didn't happen in 2021 so responsible adults could respond to better-late-than-never outrage to enable reform. The incoming criminal regime of profiteers, overlords & useful idiots will leverage newfound political will to make it all so much worse
Well if Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. thinks our healthcare system stinks maybe he can break the chain of for profit health insurance companies. But considering the company he keeps it’s only going to get worse.
:) "Appointing Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as Health Minister with nearly 80 Nobel laureates opposing the choice is like giving the Ministry of Education to a hamster who won a math contest: a decision as enlightened as diving into an empty pool." Amen Tonvoisin (French Dissending Writer) Take care
Long before AI and Algorithms, the Government has been doing this for years...If you are covered by Medicare, after 60days of inpatient care, you have NO COVERAGE. If you are poor, you are eligible for public assistance.
Albert Camus makes a strong argument in his essay "The Rebel". Supporters of this murder express the conviction that this world is dedicated to death. If this is how America rebels, we are on a path of suicidal nihilism Rebellion is a protest against death.
Old news! UH is not unique in its business practices. Americans have long suffered at the hands of healthcare providers with no cost relief in sight. How is your 2025 monthly premium - mine is ridiculously higher. Pure greed!
New York Times supported GWB's narrative about Iraqi weapons of mass destruction. No one should EVER trust them again, not until NYT has made amends to every Iraqi family who lost a child, and to every Iraqi tortured at Abu Ghraib.
Insurance companies their shareholders and executives should earn their keep with better healthcare outcomes not squeezing their customers for every last bit of money.
The minute I saw the news I told my family this is a pay back for medical claim denial. Can’t even say I feel sad for a life loss consider how many death under UH.
If the CEO of UnitedHealth had not died in the attack, and needed extraordinary and extended health care to recover, guaranteed that he would never have faced his treatment being delayed or denied.
Reality is even if it WAS denied-he has the money to pay for any non-covered services. Our nation blames those who do not have a looks down on them for existing without. It’s a caste system. People without deserve to suffer because they just should have worked harder.
My aunt survived breast cancer and the horrific treatment for it, then spent over a year fighting UHC for her double breast reconstruction because she had elected to have both breasts removed, on doctors recommendation, instead of just the one full of cancer.
UHC “disagreed”.
#healthcare #cancer
I have news for you the root cause of this entire problem is the federal government that enables all these companies to do everything it does that sucks. Solve that problem and the healthcare industry gets fixed.
People are at their most vulnerable when they are disposed of by the “insurance care” system.
The denials are 123.
It’s a rubric they use. One they’ve seen to be effective and unchallenged by the legal system.
I’m loving watching the Today show and NBC cover this story, they keep trying to make the CEO a martyr but they’ve also seen the Social Media chatter…😂😂😂
For any Canadian that buys travel insurance you know what I’m talking about. In the back of your mind you’re wondering if your insurance company is going to pull a “pre-existing” trick & not pay out.
So why would you want domestic private healthcare?
I remember. It was such a sad story. Young, looked health, just married & a trip to Thailand with his wife turned into a nightmare. After the media coverage exposed the nastiness of the insurance company he made it back to Canada. He succumbed to his cancer eventually.
All insurance companies are like this! They love to sell you a policy, collect your premiums & then they pay an army of employees to find a hangnail in your past to deny you coverage.
Trump has always wanted rid of health care because it’s expensive for the government and he and his rich friends don’t need it.
A prime example of Trump doing what is best for him and sod the rest of the population. But that’s what his dopy supporters voted for, so now that’s what they've got
Medical decisions should be between patient and doctor, period. Furthermore, insurance companies have gotten out of hand putting profit over people. My long term care insurance, which I have had for 30 years, has raised their premiums by 50% since I retired. His pet insurance doubled this year.
Even before the algorithms, UHC has denied and partially denied vast numbers of claims. It is inherent in their for-profit model that they rip people off.
Watch they won't have anything happen to them.
They made over 300 billion last year. They will get some little fine not equal to the damage they did.
America's 2 tier justice system. Rich / then the actual law for everyone else.
As a nurse in long term care I witness the denials daily. Its heartbreaking. I dont , in any way, condone murder, but maybe this is the catalyst needed to bring the issue to the forefront.
the same dems that get millions from corporations and billionaires? dems like insider trading nancy pelosi? sorry, but it ain’t happening. the usa is a business, not a country. gonna take a revolution to change that.
She wasn’t populist and i watched her campaign team give an interview and they were absolutely clueless as to how to campaign her correctly. They spent too much time defending name calling and insults. They didnt do it the way he was with social media short clips lacking nuance about issues
Populism is terrible. Like a bunch of 8th grade children who think if they suck up to and serve the most popular kid, then they’ll be invited to all the house parties in high school.
She started out doing that and it was working. It was smart to dismiss, ignore and degrade him as anything other than a felon and a failed experiment as a president. And then for some reason she went defensive. And i have no idea why
If your doctor, hospital , surgical team says you need a procedure or that a certain medication is needed that should be the end of discussion & paid for. Insurance companies aren’t doctors & don’t know your conditions. Period.
I think you mean neither should legal slavery…. This nation voted in a man who intends to round up & jail anyone he thinks shouldn’t be in America. They voted for him and his cronies to profit from this injustice while destroying our economy. Those people won’t be “deported” who he rounds up.
As a past employee I screamed this forever! Every fucking dollar they made was from premiums. Consumers paid for them to become billionaires. People died to make them rich. It’s fucking disgusting and it needs to stop and now THEY need to pay… by whatever means necessary
"... THEY need to pay… by whatever means necessary ..."
The can be said for this incoming shadow that is about to engulf the halls of government beginning the 20th of January... by any means ...
WHAT HAPPEN TO THIS COUNTRY? NO ONE WANTS TO HEAR FROM THE PROFESSIONALS, THEY WANT TO HEAR FROM THE CRAZIES. AMERICA, DO NOT LET BEING A FELON COOL TO BE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES.FROM A ONE OF MANY CONCERN AMERICANS.
We are slow walking into a nightmare. I Was in DC this week. People aren’t giving up—it was palpable. But dark days are ahead. People’s spine, loyalty to country, and integrity will be put to the test. Beyond getting elected again.
I would have too if I didn’t move into public health. Every type of nursing I worked in ( now 27 years) dealt with payment and interfered with care. PH has its own set of issues but at least I’m not watching someone get filthy rich in the process. The next 4 is going to test my limits 🙏🤞
Cigna once denied me coverage because they said I had “throat cancer”! I’d visited my doc for strep throat. Insurance is a crime perpetrated on Americans and shareholder profits ought to go to a government health plan.
Ask anyone who works with patients anywhere in the healthcare sector and you will hear a LOT of horror stories about insurance companies. United is one of the worst.
A Public Option
Put medical care back into the hands of physicians & healthcare professionals. Kick out the expensive “no value” insurance companies. They are in this to make money.
As well, we have to start pushing other private insurance companies, because where there’s smoke, there’s fire. Americans, we have the power, we have the numbers, we have to unify because we are all suffering the same. We must stop letting this division & exploitation happen at all of our expense!
UnitedHealthcare is under fire and caught in the crosshairs of justice. Their algorithm of denying care is pulling the trigger on some controversial decisions. Now they’re staring down the barrel of a class-action lawsuit. Hopefully, the courts can aim for fairness and hit the bullseye.
Capitalism has worked great where I live; we've lifted millions out of poverty, we have universal healthcare, and we have 90% home ownership in a real estate market pricier than NYC.
I have a rather long paper on historical materialism and its impact of Soviet Socialist Realism, as well as the hybrid capitalist / socialist systems across East Asia, so I actually have "learned it."
Different cultures, different values, different experiences.
For these CEOs the writing is on the wall; they need to listen and end the corruption in the healthcare insurance industry; congress needs to pay attention they could be next.
The whole thing, all of it, is shite. For-profit healthcare is no different than for-profit war, the marriage of the military to the industrial/manufacturing sector. Radical change is needed in the very structure of government itself. We cannot dismantle the master's house using the master's tools.
They have been absolutely horrible to work with from a provider viewpoint. This fact makes them horrible to work with as a policy holder. This system in our country is sick care, not health care and it’s an embarrassing disgrace. Put our government on UHC so they can’t grift I mean serve as long.
If you don't want people to be happy you're dead then maybe don't accumulate a Smaug-like horde of wealth by being a monstrous parasite who enriches himself on the pain, suffering and deaths of others while you're alive...
Oh I’m sorry. Your request was denied. We need you to try at least 3 formulary emotions for a minimum of 30 days each before condolences may be considered.
Please resubmit your PA request with documentation of trials when completed.
I didn’t say it did, but I’m not sure the article you posted above would’ve run had he not died. It is causing a lot of scrutiny the practices of private insurers, which is pertinent as the ACA will likely soon be abolished.
unfortunately, it still changes nothing. Private health insurance has factored profit over patients for decades, and get little to no restrictions when it comes to proper reform. We had a chance when the ACA was passed, until provisions to hem in insurers was axed by the GOP.
It’s time to reform the healthcare industry. The ACA has empowered private health insurance companies to continuously squeeze profit and drive up cost. Health insurance companies should be NOT for profit.
No. Private health insurance should not exist! We should be like every other civilized country and just take care of the sick no out-of-pocket costs. Tax the rich significantly more to lay for it.
ACA was the best compromise that could be achieved at the time and helped many Americans. Yes, we need to keep moving forward but let's not forget all those who have access that had none before.
While not advocating for murder, the only real change will be enacted if he's not caught. Only then will this idea be entertained by the players involved.

Unfortunately, I don’t see this ending in the next four years.
I just switched to Clover
Not trying to stump for anybody here, but you are allowed to switch
and teachers really get screwed
Oops
They're always looking for new and exciting ways to punish teachers
Message to Nigel Farage: No way. Not now. Not ever!
A business is there to make money, and to maximise shareholder profit.
If even the most essential service doesn't make a profit capitalism isn't interested - that's government's job.
That why a 'successful businessman' isn't necessarily qualified to run government
Move your policies away from United Healthcare if you can.
Our dollars are our votes!
Kïll the company!
We know, why.
The suspect will have to live with what he did.
As others have said to me… he had good cause.
Voting is.
But I'm sure trump has a great plan since he's promised it's coming soon (for 11 years now lol)
Why the fuck would you bring his idiot ass name into this?
I'm afraid, too, but for the first time it's the rich few who feel attacked, not us, the poor masses.
Hard not to feel "different" about this.
Time is a flat circle.
May the claimants be successful and the images awarded be vast.
Shame on America's healthcare system.

They’ll Nazi where that idea started.
Private Healthcare is not “more efficient” as they claim! It’s a disaster in the USA!
How could any Canadian say private healthcare is better!?!
#NeverVoteConservative

So why would you want domestic private healthcare?

B. This is, of course, the general critique of America's private insurance model. Health insurance should not be a for-profit operation.
