Video game graphics have become hyperrealistic over the past four decades, with companies pouring money into the technology. But in recent years, the upgrades have had diminishing returns. The industry is now wondering whether a longtime marketing tool is instead a financial liability.

Do video games look too real?
(”customers” = “shareholders”)
(”happy” = “rich”)
Sure there can be both. But I’d rather play Minecraft, Mario, and Zelda than other options with “better” graphics.
When you spend billions to make millions .... Maybe the turd is a little too polished ?
It may be boomers doing that or maybe games don't need more visual accuracy for "game play". Maybe untapped customers don't want to buy more powerful graphics computers but do want better narratives or a more complex puzzle instead of repetitive "battle levels".🤔
You're right about customers but still the wrong conclusion
It's just stylised.
I also recommend giving indie games a go, maybe not as hi-fi as AAA but real cool:
Cuphead, Gris, Journey, Witchfire, System Shock 2 remake, Wartales, Foundation, Observer, Papers Please, Gunk, OTXO & many, many more.
All real fun single player exp.
They even talked about the difference between the wind waker artsyle.
