Googly eyes appeared on pieces of public art throughout Bend, Oregon, last month. The identity of the Googly Eye Bandit was unknown until the prankster came forward to claim responsibility for some of the eyes.

NYT finally finds a story it’s qualified to cover.
The world is burning. You spent the last year ignoring the freight train barreling into our democracy. You are supposed to be the 4th estate, speaking truth to power but you played nice with Shitler, all for better headlines. Pack it in. Apologize.
Haha, I live in Bend, Oregon. Most of us thought that this was a cute and harmless prank. I just love how it has actually made it to the national news, even the BBC picked it up. In these very unsettling times, I think we could all use more googly eyes in our lives. They give us a reason to smile! 👀
The NYT also has a food and crossword section, should they replace those with writing on Trump as well? I think America needs diversity in its articles otherwise we’re going to go crazy and be on edge for the next four years. It’s just too much.
I read the NYTimes each morning and it sets the tone of Trump related anxiety. The times is not bending it’s knee to Trump. Not by a long shot. I missed this story in my doom scrolling, but I’m glad I saw it here and that it put a smile on my face. Why would I let that man rob me of simple joy?
I didn’t say you. But I will
say this; I think that anyone who thinks the press should avoid cute, human interest stories in the midst of any national crisis may have it wrong. And not to be one of those jerky people, but you are using quotes incorrectly.
Who cares? Investigate why trump got away with treasonous crimes? What makes him above the law? Investigate. No one gives a shit about googly eyes!!!
Do your job of checks and balances, not promote idiocy and compliance.
They taught you in journalism school that the press is checks and balances? I agree that the press is important but what about the FBI, Congress, Senate, CIA and DOJ?
Are they not the ones who are to monitor and correct what's going off the rails?
Yes. Did you Google the fourth estate? It will explain how the media keeps all 3 branches in their toes.
Not anymore. The gatekeepers (owners) are controlling everything. There isn't any journalistic integrity. It's over.
Yes. It was the 4th estate of checks and balances. Never to be seen again.
CIA, DOJ, every damn committee. Have any of them told us about the corruption of the Republican party? Will they ever? Nope. Investigative journalism is the only way they get caught.
That's why trump started to call them fake. That's why he wants to abolish many news agencies.
No. Without any form of oversight they will do what they please. If no one reports the wrong doing it will continue.
Every journalist has to recite an oath to keep these balances in check.
At this point they are only doing what they want and not what they should be. They are controlled now.
Yes they are controlled, but it's not what you think!
I'm 100% sure 'real' journalists across the MSM landscape want to do what's right, but they are all controlled by 'right leaning' organziations & ownership! They're just doing what they're told to do,...
Actually, news media outlets are part of that system.
They are to report the truth to keep the 3 branches in line. Without them how would anyone know the criminality of our government?
It's called the 4th estate. If trusted media can't keep them in check, the other 3 will run amuck.
Maybe look to the New Yorker for some real important news. Here's their headline. Now, doesn't it make your ball of twine look lame?
"The effect of Donald Trump’s executive orders was to convey an open season, in which virtually nothing—including who gets to be an American citizen—is guaranteed."
I get what you're saying, but with the nasty state of affairs in the country, with a lunatic president and lunatic congress, wouldn't you think that stories about balls of twine belong on like page 30.
They've posted lots of other stuff today about more pressing stories. I don't think it's the worst thing in the world to get an occasional break from the doom and gloom of everything else happening right now.
This style of reporting is why people lose faith in big media publications. Nobody gives a shit about googly eyes while the party you helped put in power destroys American lives and businesses to benefit the wealthy.

If the FBI and everyone else did something we wouldn't have this president in OUR White House.

No wonder you're losing subscribers faster than you can replace them.
