The truth is that the “best” dog is probably a healthy mutt. But that’s not a category at the Westminster. So if our options are among breeds with problems bred into them over the years. I’ll take the kindest, most gentle and most compatible for peaceful coexistence with human society. Goldens
A very fair criticism. I’m curious though why you’re focusing on Goldens when there are many more egregious examples of irresponsible breeding practices which lead to unnecessary suffering. For example, Bulldogs, Pugs and other deformed faced dogs who have trouble *breathing*.
Given how many so-called pedigree dogs have serious or life-limiting medical problems, due to irresponsible breeding, any dog show which lauds pedigree breeding practices has major ethical questions to answer
I don’t know how they pick these winners—I see dogs just as nice (or nicer) on my daily walks. But hey, it’s a welcome break from the relentless bad news cycle.
