Joann, the fabrics and crafts retailer that has supplied quilters, seamstresses and school projects for 80 years, announced that it would close down all of its stores in the latest chapter of financial tumult for the company.

So sad. I’ve sewn for nearly 60 years. My mother and I made my wedding dress in 1967(cost was 13.00!). I made several dresses and prom dresses for my daughter. This news almost brings me to tears………….😪
Idk if it's the store's fault w/ their branding & advertising, or the customers, but I only just found out last year they had regular art supplies like paint, colored pencils, paper, brushes, etc and weren't just a sewing supply store. Maybe if ppl had known that, they would've had more customers.
They were pretty much a cheap alternative to Michael's. All the same art supplies, in addition to sewing and craft stuff, with much cheaper prices and regular sales online. Shopped there for the very first time last year after finding out they had art stuff and Michael's wasn't that great anymore.
Yeah but when people say crafts, I think like piecing stuff together, I don't think traditional art on paper. And that seems to be how people always talk about the store, for sewing and those kinds of crafts, not as in traditional art.
So, you needed it to say art, craft, and sewing. Makes sense. I guess it's really the only place I thought to look for those things now since we don't have a Michael's, our art store closed, and I'm not going to Hobby Lobby. The pickings are getting slim in person.
I mean, ppl call Michael's an art store typically, at least I think they do. So I always knew it had art supplies. Joann was always talked about for sewing and even when ppl mention it for crafts, they never seem to mean it in a paper art supplies way. So yeah, I just never knew🤷♀️
I think lots of businesses fall down on advertising, just assuming people know they exist & what they exist for. I've seen businesses on local FB lamenting going out of business, and it's the first time 100 of us ever heard of them and we want to go. But they never advertised 'til it was too late.
And this is a classic example of the damage private equity does. Private equity companies should be outlawed. What they do to companies and brands is criminal.
I knew Joann was in trouble when I interacted with a wing nut employee in Indiana who was bragging about not getting vaxxed for Covid. I couldn’t get out of the store fast enough.
Trump's February unemployment numbers are going to be interesting, because he owns this economy now. Joe Biden is dust in the wind. Knowing Trump, he'll have Musk rig the numbers, Trump will lie and blame someone else.
If there was ever a concept that didn’t fit the box box model, it’s a fabric store. Sorry for the people losing their jobs, but that was doomed from the start.
And at a time when there’s a generation of kids who want to sew, knit, repair and make things. At least based on my nieces (age 10 and 13) and their friends.
There is a renewed interest in sewing and crafts. But for the last decade, my local store was a miserable place to shop. Hardly any employees, and the ones who did work there clearly hated their jobs. Their corporate culture. So sad there is now nowhere to shop in person for fabric.
I am not surprised at all. It didn't have to be this way. I used to be a frequent customer and wrote to them many times about how to improve the shopping experience, both online and in the store. I never once got a reply. It had the potential to be a great store, but they had very poor management.
Absolutely agree. I said elsewhere that I wouldn't shop Hobby Lobby if it was the last fabric store on earth. I've got a loom, and I know how to use it.
Damn it. They’re not what they were but often have things the interior decorating shops, that Michael’s has become, don’t. And Hobby Lobby is its own special problem… (I like shopping on Sunday.)
Wow... when I was a kid my mom used to drag my sister and me all through the store. It always had a unique smell. Just like old office buildings. They smell of manilla folders and Pine Sol.
Agree. Joann wasn't my to choice for yarn, but certainly was the primary choice for yard goods. You can't really buy fabric online because you can't feel it.

Let’s keep track of the numbers which end up closing for good, or reorganization.
I have so many patterns I wanted to make but without apparel knits, crepes, and cottons, homemade clothes are done
I’m so sad
Just awful seriously
Meaning it lasted longer than most other stores bought by the vampires known as private equity!
I first was turned off by Hobby Lobby because of birth control, but then I couldn’t figure out why they didn’t use barcodes. Read up on that one! 😱
