Thank you for covering this. The horses live horrible lives and are basically used and discarded, sometimes killed for insurance, by the wealthy. Anyone who loves horses should be appalled at this.

Great piece - and I'm optimistic that as state budgets tighten, lawmakers will start to wind down these boondoggles. The article cites the example of Steve Asmussen re poor worker treatment. I adopted one of his former racehorses, and I can assure you he treated them poorly as well.

Respectfully, many of you replying aren't aware the horse racing industry as a whole treats horses as athletes & with dignity and respect. In 2024, the Horse Racing and Integrity act took over nationwide and since then the fatality rate has fallen to the lowest level ever and will continue to fall.

Respectfully, the horse racing industry has a long way to go before it can truthfully claim it treats its horses with dignity and respect. On track fatalities are down, but the aftercare situation is shameful…and NHBPA is at the Supreme Court trying to stop HISA’s enforcement of its rules

I'm aware of what the NHBPA is doing. The supreme court would not put the case on the docket for this calendar, so except for in West Virginia, Louisiana and Texas, HISA and HIWU (the Welfare unit) are in full force and effect. Thanks for your thoughtful reply.

The sport of Horse Racing, like boxing and other activities which are dangerous all have Social License to Operate. Certainly people are entitled to try to revoke that license. To do so would put millions of people out of work & significantly hurt the economy of more than a few states.
