its funny because I use to travel to Bell Labs sites as part of my job in the early 1990s and watching Severance i was constantly getting the Bell Labs and Lucent vibe.

The lab was funded by the profits of a regulated monopoly. The drive to get rid of monopolies is what killed the labs.
