Sorry, first line is the steelman version. The title treats this as a cute story, rather than a serious (and probably unconstitutional) abuse of power.
None of the part shown in OP's skeet is good journalism.
The Trump Administration reminds me of the movie "The Devil's Advocate". Corruption, self interest, fraud and criminal behavior collapses the entire system as more people get sucked into the vortex of evil through fear, greed and idolatry.
Firms need to band together and fight. Every industry, social network, education - needs to band together to fight. Canada just told Trump ‘go f yourself’ and he caved. Fight the bully w power - for America!
I don't disagree with these conclusions and would add that it also satisfies Trump's need to retaliate against his perceived enemies AND allows those who want to curry favor with Trump to demonstrate their loyalty.
The US military needs to step in now and arrest these people! I heard the military is sworn to the constitution and not the WH administration. So where are they? Jail them! Fascist America 2025... 1939 is history and let's keep it that way! https://bsky.app/profile/gmf1369.bsky.social/post/3llhlvpqcgk2t
Trump 2.0 is laying bare how unbelievably incapable our system is to deal with this degree of utter corruption and malfeasance. It would seem there is *nothing* to stop this rapid slide into fascistic authoritarianism.
The Orange Felon is an autocrat, by nature & nurture, who undermines just about everything about the United States that makes this country exceptional.
If these firms are intimidated about losing business, I believe GoFundMe accounts might be an option. I’m pretty sure they would not have trouble raising money if it meant saving democracy.
The only way for Republicans to win in the future is to destroy our voting system. The more difficult they make it the less Democrats will vote. It's up to all of us to fight for our right to vote. That's what scumbag dictators do, they eliminate freedom piece by piece state by state voter by voter.
“Regardless, Mr. Trump’s moves have the potential — and perhaps the goal — to undermine people’s ability to challenge their government. “It is the president’s deliberate intent to chill the nation’s largest law firms from representing cases that he dislikes.”👎
The rich and powerful, such as these law firms, MUST speak out. They have the power and opportunity to tell the truth to large audiences WITHOUT consequences...for now.
I do stress the "for now." This could be a limited time offer.
I thought his Supreme Court had already decided that.
“Under our constitutional structure of separated powers, the nature
of Presidential power entitles a .. President to absolute immunity
from criminal prosecution for actions within his conclusive and preclu-
sive constitutional authority.”
The Nazis went after the law and lawyers early on, fully eliminating any roadblocks to their fascism prior to their big moves: murdering Jews and political opponents, and anyone who spoke out against them, invading countries with assets they wanted, smashing the media.
Of course, they are doing Flood the Zone with the Court System. Donny is seeking to overwhelm the system. He can them write 5,000 EOs and they will just be done.
Bravo to those firms opposing these thugs, their values protect clients too, ethics are firms sword and shield. To those firms who folded to Donald Trump and his thuggish threats and joined his team, these firms are weaker than a wet piece of tissue, who needs chicken hawk lawyers like that eh?
Change “could undermine” to “is undermining” and your on to something. Although truthfully this is mainly about revenge against lawyers who have braught Trump or some of his allies to heal in the courtroom. Like most things Trump there is no grand strategy, it’s just petty pay back.
Agree NYTs is a captured media company. Embarrassing how bad they have become over the last number of years. I am loath to lazily blame the “media”, but after careful analysis I could not avoid the conclusion that it has lost its way - 30 plus year subscriber, but no longer.
The fact he is trying to get this done is anti-democratic thinking and wrong even if he’s not successful, also typical bulying. treaten to sue and hope they will self-sensor
This should have been the article that came out the day that the first EO targeting a law firm was signed.
I'm not a lawyer, not a journalist, not a politician, yet still I knew this was about scaring lawyers from taking cases that go against the administration. DUHHHHHH
No, pro bono and standing against "lawfare" is about what they plan to do and how their plans are illegal. When they and their ilk are charged with crimes against humanity, treason, and war crimes in the coming years, Skadden will represent them. They have essentially protected private actors.
Hilarious.
People in the USA still don't have the slightest clue about what is going on in their country.
In any country, if to be honest.
But in the USA, it is much more fun.
Normally in American movies, when there's a national disaster, everyone panics and everything descends into absolute chaos until the source of the disaster is addressed and resolved.
Why hasn't there been a mobilization against Trump and his clique before they turn the US into a wasteland?

Trump attacks free speech and an independent judiciary in an authoritarian push for unchecked power.
The title looks like a steelman version of Trump's position -- that approach is a good intellectual exercise and piss-poor journalism.

Scary stuff!!!

sive constitutional authority.”
This is constitutional crisis. This is fascism. Act now and prepare for the worst, because it’s coming.
Duh! @nytimes.com that’s the whole point. Why are you so subservient now? Hummm

I did not know that the US people was so lazy and coward.
THAT should be the first line of every article from this rag
cancelled last summer with a detailed explanation
They don't care who is in charge, they just like the controversy for clicks business model
The authoritarian creed:
Do as I say, not as I do;
what’s okay for me, is not for you.

A country where children are treated with vitamin A against measles seems lost anyway.
Back to middle ages!

In the UK public bodies (which includes bodies carrying out oversight) have an obligation to comply with public law.
They must act within their powers and decisions must be reasonable, rational and proportionate.
“They’re all bending and saying, ‘Sir, thank you very much,’” Mr. Trump said, adding that they were asking, “‘Where do I sign? Where do I sign?’”
Bingo.
