Maybe EU thinks you need the security pact more than them and should 'pay' more. In Brexit, you said Europe needed you more - so don't bother then.

Defensive pact is probably seen as mutually beneficial, but if one sude feels it could get more in the bargain, they can try doing that.

There could be some seeing UK get the better of the defence pact given that EU is so many more nations contributing.

EU isn't a country on par with UK.

I’m not defending Brexit - I just don’t think saying ha! Brexit particularly works here given the inevitability of it. The certainties in life are death, taxes and the U.K. arguing with mainland Europe about fishing rights.

...and by standing outside the EU we can either give in on points like this or lose more. By standing outside of the whole, each individual dispute costs us more and is one we're more likely to lose.

I’m not missing that at all. I’m completely, and painfully, aware of what has been lost. Though resolving fishing disputes in the EU/EC framework has hardly been plain sailing - any pre-2016 first year law student will tell you that.

But fine - ha! Brexit.

Yeah, but having a disagreement on fishing didn't mean we lost cooperation on security or anything else - Brexit has turned every such dispute up to 11 in terms of implication.
