Maybe EU thinks you need the security pact more than them and should 'pay' more. In Brexit, you said Europe needed you more - so don't bother then.

So back to my original attempt at an honest question, why is a defence pact not seen as Mutually beneficial, but as a UK demand?

Defensive pact is probably seen as mutually beneficial, but if one sude feels it could get more in the bargain, they can try doing that.
There could be some seeing UK get the better of the defence pact given that EU is so many more nations contributing.
EU isn't a country on par with UK.
