although the changes are mostly very subtle, they're still noticeable to people like me who know the games better than their own house. it's a welcome change and I hope they do more (and maybe release a new SDK?) with what they've got. buuut in classic valve fashion it's not all good news.

they updated the macos binaries. cool! however, they're still 32-bit, so it's a pointless update, it will not run. epic!
hl2 deathmatch has 64-bit engine binaries, but no 64-bit game binaries, so it's useless. 64-bit hammer might work though!

it downloads macos and linux binaries for the episodes and lost coast even if you're on windows. this is not a big deal but kinda leads me to believe they got really lazy with building this update, which requires some further explanation.

for most (if not all, I'm not sure) source engine games, valve uses the same codebase, separated into a few additional folders and ifdefs for the different games that get included/excluded based on the projects you generate with VPC, valve's cmake-like project generator.

however, the codebase, for some reason, is still split into "mp" and "sp" directories, which are, afaik, pretty much entirely separate, leading to a large mismatch between the two branches, as multiplayer generally gets a lot more updates.

for example, the 64-bit engine version. it's most likely exclusive to the multiplayer branch, and leftovers of it are still visible to this day in the source sdk base 2013 code on github. now why is all of this relevant?
