Maybe the most important thing to say about this work is that it seems to provide a pretty inexpensive way to get a picture of the state of the teacher labor market in close to real time. This is hugely important as the policy debates I see about the teacher shortage often lack much nuance.

But, of course, I have to offer a few more thoughts. First, we should not be treating the teacher labor market as if staffing challenges are generic. They are way more prevalent for some teaching categories (e.g., special education).

And, staffing challenges are more severe for school systems serving more disadvantaged student populations (quartiles are for district %URM students), and (generally) for rural districts.

Well, I'd say relatively less problem, but I also think that none of this (my work here) speaks to the quality of teachers or principals, which is, of course, vitally important.
