Academics should yield to the same advice. Nothing erodes the credibility of experts faster than credential holding "experts" talking outside of their expertise.

Take this recent example:

In this article, the authors (only one of whom's CV was publicly available) make incorrect assumptions, use them as a premise, and take the logic out to a ridiculous conclusion.

Anyone with any non-trivial amount of contact with the services would see through their line of argument.

They contend: The services are losing talent because soldiers et al. are chasing paychecks and Skillbridge programs are incentivizing the most talented to leave AND the remedy for this talent drain is to end the Skillbridge program because then talent will stay in uniform.

It's because the author is a professor (in a school of Civic Life and Leadership no less). Someone on the outside could look up her credentials and not look further.

They would not ask:
-Is this her area of research? 🚫
-Does she has expertise/experience with Skillbridge?🚫

So like the Chiropractor on TikTok selling snake oil under the title of Doctor (and conveniently forgetting the "of Chiropractic" part) academic pontificating on topics well outside their expertise, have terrible impacts.
