I don't know if it's still true, but Sunday strips often had to be submitted about 6 weeks in advance. This is why they often stand alone and ongoing storylines didn't line up with the Sundays (except in rare exceptions.) Also the extra pay you got for doing a Sunday comic wasn't much either.

The advance schedule of Sunday strips is why Peanuts ran until mid-February of 2000 after Schulz retired in late 1999.

I believe it is still so, in spite of printing innovations. It's because of the need to color the Sunday strip I think. There were some serial strips like Dick Tracy and Little Orphan Annie that used "synchronized" stories continuing on Sunday, these had to be planned out in advance

Lucy was introduced as a baby, like most of the Peanuts cast. I find it weird how almost all of em grew older and became about the same age, stopping around 8-10 years old.
