Results so far:
In Senate District 36, 130,000 votes counted so far. Republicans have 58% of the votes (the R candidate got 56.9% in the last election, which was in 2022). Low turnout as expected - for comparison, the 2022 primary had 220,708 votes.

In California's Assembly District 32 special primary, turnout is even lower, about 50,000 voters total (Assembly districts are half the size of Senate districts). There were 77,000 votes in the 2024 primary.

In SD36, as of 2/8, Republican Tony Strickland spent over $500,000 (about half from the CA Republican Party) vs Democrat Jimmy Pham's $12,000 (CA Dems haven't endorsed yet), yet Tony only gained one percentage point over the previous R candidate's vote total. Runoff is in April.

Note that if at the end of vote counting there is a candidate with over 50%, there will not be a runoff- that candidate will be elected, since this is a special primary
