Paul Curry, an amateur magician in New York City, was the first to discover that a square can be cut into a few pieces and the pieces rearranged to make a square of the same size that has a hole in it! There are many versions of the Curry paradox, but this one is the simplest.

These puzzles are almost always cut out because that way it's harder to see how the squares don't line up perfectly. In one position, you are spreading out the area of a square over multiple blocks, thus making it appear as if it disappeared.
