In "The Origins of Totalitarianism" (1951), Hannah Arendt notes power isn't making people believe lies. It's when, after lies revealed, people say it doesn't matter and is proof of cleverness. When people tolerate lies rather than admit they've been duped? Then you have them.

But this kind of crap feeds the egos of the testosterone-poisoned moral and intellectual weaklings in society who believe they've been held back by a "soft" protective government and just need a chance to prove their mettle.
