the nature of driving everywhere demands pre-planning your trips, usually spoiled for choice with places outside your community. being isolated and closed off in transit makes it impossible to deeply engage with the world and people you’ll find between here and there.

if you live in a city, or a suburb of a major metro, i can guarantee that there’s paths and little spots to rest that you pass all the time, and don’t even know they exist. isn’t that crazy? that “short sidewalk that goes nowhere” you get a glimpse of sometimes exists for a reason

if you’re not sure how to find these paths, almost every US city has one or multiple local advocacy groups for walkers, cyclists, and transit users. reach out to them, and they’ll be more than happy to share what they know, where things get messy, and how to stay safe

if your options seem limited on google maps, apple maps, etc: these apps usually don’t have recent or complete data outside of really big cities. They also are known to inflate non-car travel times or suggest dangerous routes when they don’t, because they prioritize seconds of time over comfort

if you can, try walking or take the bus to one errand on the weekend. experience what that’s like. get to know people who have to. be a member of your community rather than someone who just leaves it. you’ll be amazed at how much more you can live in one afternoon than you can in a month of driving
