Still thinking a lot about luddites, and as much as the prevailing narrative is about automation displacing skilled workers with cheap (often indentured) workers, the thing that my mind keeps coming to is the underlying thing that enabled it was financialisation.

Uber is a 19th century factory for the mind (@bcmerchant.bsky.social's wording, not mine). But unlike the actual factories, the capital cost of building it is negligible.
Then, as now, the government was captured by the financiers who were making money off the factories. And so will not work to threaten their revenue streams.
