🇬🇷 Greece in 1974 saw a series of coups and significantly saw the Turkish invasion of Cyprus. 2 weeks after their debut in Brighton, under which they were in a transitional period towards democratisation, Greece faced a coup led by anti-democratic hard-liner Dimitrios Ioannidis.

This regime was responsible for the coup in Cyprus in July 1974, creating the Cyprus crisis and leading to the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, a situation that is still unresolved. Amidst fears of war with Türkiye and disappointment in Greece’s failure to protect Cyprus, society unravelled.

It is safe to say we will never know whether their withdrawal was reactionary, but two points can be made against it: 1) Türkiye had broadcast the contest for several years and its eventual inclusion is not surprising as a result; 2) Greece had bigger fish to fry than Eurovision in 1975.

After the practical collapse of society and fresh new beginnings, Greece may simply not have found the resources nor had interest to participate. They would eventually return in 1976 with a song that would be as politically charged as another country’s was in 1975. More on that in #2.
