This country is becoming more like Nazi Germany every day. I see only darkness for this country and there's no one to save us. Republicans are dumbing down society to keep citizens compliant. I don't know how we get out of this.

As a former academic, this kind of stuff hurts my soul. My former university, WVU, made massive budget cuts eliminating entire programs including the entire Department of Modern Languages. State universities in red states are increasingly in danger of losing funding.

At the heart of the matter, as always, is misinformation. Conservatives willingly conflate what goes on at private elite schools with what happens at state schools. They believe the prime directive of faculty is to "brainwash" their students.

In reality, cons object to their world view challenged.

Indeed.

Universities do a *terrible* job selling their value to society. A bachelor's degree isn't the only path to prosperity but US higher ed is still the envy of the world, especially as it pertains to research - including human sexuality. It's a pity university folks cannot better sell that.

I work at a midsize regional public university and we try to tell the story of our value. This war on universities isn't good for any institution, but in the case of institutions like ours we do not have the budget or resources to combat the noise compared to the right-wing media machine.
