The world all of us Americans have lived in is one where—despite our griping & not awesome moments & political narratives—the United States has been an engine of innovation, prosperity, security, human progress

Many find it remarkable easy to believe in the sanctity and isolation of our American island.
Many believe we should “focus more on problems at home” without understanding this immense, fragile gravity of human progress that has been our bounty. /2
These network effects — that have benefitted us more than any other nation — will evaporate.
It will all get harder. Our health, economy, security, way of living — it will all get harder and lonelier. /3
We think we’re sending a message that everyone else must learn to stand alone because it sounds good to be selfish for awhile.

Meanwhile the erosion at home and the lack of investment in our people will make us less able to compete with less unseen bounty. /5

More than anything we need voices of leadership reminding there is a different American future over the horizon — and not more of this same small thinking, seeking to make Americans weak, small, and manipulable by any adversarial or illiberal force. /7
That this may now change is deeply tragic.
