Yes and no at the same time. It really depends in the context if your playthrough, I wouldn't bother with them much at the start. But I would also try experimenting with one or two when you feel like it, just to get into that mechanic slowly.
I go hard on malignant items until I have two malfunctions. They aren’t worth a critical malfunction, but fixing the regular ones is very doable and makes for a fun short term goal.
